It is always helpful to have another pair of eyes review student writing. Students will submit a completed draft of their personal statement to a Great College Fit counselor who will thoroughly review it for structure, organization, tone, message, voice, and mechanics. The student will receive detailed feedback, including edits and suggestions for strengthening the overall piece, via a discussion online or on the phone. Service includes review of one personal statement/one round of edits.

A strong final draft takes time to produce. Please allow enough time to draft, review and edit your final essay. All writing is entirely student-produced.

Because we understand the critical role that student writing plays in the admissions process, only our most experienced counselors will provide this service. Students will work with either Amy Mendelson, M.Ed., owner of Great College Fit, or Dr. Thomas LeCarner, Director of Great College Fit in Boulder, Colorado. Amy Mendelson holds an English degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She has 16 years experience as a high school English teacher, during which she taught all levels of English, including AP Language and Composition. Collectively, she has been advising students on their writing for more than 25 years.

Thomas LeCarner, Ph.D is the Director of Great College Fit in Colorado. Dr. LeCarner is a former professor of literature and writing at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is an internationally published author, he served for seven years as a professional magazine editor, and has 15 years of college teaching experience.

The personal statement (aka the “college essay”) is an integral part of the college application and often poses significant challenges for students. Applicants often feel overwhelmed when it comes to identifying what makes a good college admissions essay, and could benefit from an expert’s help in conceptualizing their unique story. In this 1-1.5 hour session, students will participate in a personal interview with a Great College Fit writing expert and will leave the session with several solid essay ideas, upon which they can build and develop a winning essay. During the session, the counselor will advise the student on writing techniques as well as develop a structural outline for the student to use in drafting his/her personal statement. This service does not include editing.

We have found that the best way to make the college admissions process manageable is by creating a final list that is both balanced and realistic, but where should a student start? During a 1-1.5 hour meeting, a Great College Fit counselor will interview the student to determine strengths, academic abilities and goals. High school transcripts and test scores will be reviewed, then together the student and counselor will develop a balanced list of schools for consideration. The goal is to identify multiple schools that offer the student what he/she is looking for. We focus on finding schools that will provide the student exceptional academic, social, and financial fit. The result of this meeting will be a list of schools that will be a starting point for further research. This is our specialty. We love finding schools that fit our students’ exact needs and wants. We recommend a final list of 6-8 schools.

PROCESS STEPS:
(Distance-session methods include: FaceTime, Skype or an online meeting platform, like Zoom–no software needed.)
1. Click on link to purchase, continue with payment.
2. Once payment is received, the student will receive a confirmation email with two surveys attached–one for the student and one for the parent to complete prior to the session.
3. Student and counselor will select a date, time and preferred session method.
4. After the meeting, the student will receive a summary of the suggested schools and step by step directions for researching schools including what to look for, resources to use and the right questions to ask.

COMPREHENSIVE COLLEGE COUNSELING

Our signature Comprehensive College Counseling program is designed to meet the needs of rising seniors as they identify, research and apply to great fit colleges. Ours is a student-driven process that encourages accountability and student ownership of the process. This flat-fee program consists of multiple one-on-one meetings with a GCF counselor. The meetings, which last about an hour, take place over many months. On average, the comprehensive program affords students more than 20 hours of personal guidance. We start with a suite of assessments to identify student strengths, skills, interests, goals and learning styles. Next, we identify suitable majors and careers and identify–and then research–a variety of college options. Students are then guided through a detailed research process to create a unique, balanced, and manageable final list of 6-8 colleges.

Once the final list is determined, we guide students through all kinds of activities to submit error-free applications, including: resume building, essay drafting, scholarship searches, application submission strategies, document submission, visiting colleges, interview preparation, and much more. In addition, our comprehensive clients benefit from a whole host of other support services, including: a parent Financial Aid Information night, student “drop in” hours, guidance in understanding offers of admission, a College Success workshop for students before they go off to college, and more.

In our comprehensive counseling program, students benefit from personalized guidance and counseling; parents benefit from the peace of mind that comes with knowing their student is supported through the entire process.

CAPP PROGRAM

CAPP students will meet monthly with a Great College Fit counselor who will monitor the student’s academic progress; review the student’s academic profile and make recommendations for courses and activities; assist in developing a personalized 4-year academic plan; identify and develop effective study techniques, and assist in developing the skills needed to be successful in high school and beyond.
